  What is a degree in Early Child Unified?

  A Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Unified (ECU) is a comprehensive degree designed to prepare educators to work effectively with all young children, from birth through age eight, including those with and without disabilities. This rigorous program integrates the core principles of early childhood education (ECE) with special education, offering a dual focus that sets its graduates apart. The curriculum typically covers child development, family engagement, developmentally appropriate practices, assessment, and individualized instruction.   What can I do with a degree in Early Child Unified?

  The career outcomes for individuals with a BS in Early Childhood Unified are diverse and highly impactful. This degree provides a pathway for graduates to be eligible for both Elementary (K–6) and Early Childhood Unified (Birth–Grade 3) licensure in Kansas - opening doors in general and special education roles. More uniquely, it also prepares professionals for roles in early intervention and special education, such as an Early Childhood Special Educator (ECSE) working with infants and toddlers in home-based or center-based settings. Furthermore, ECU graduates are sought after for leadership roles in child care administration, educational advocacy, and non-profit organizations focused on child and family well-being.   What if you already have an Elementary Education degree with initial licensure? You can add your Early Childhood Unified endorsement to your teaching credentials in just one summer! All courses are offered in the summer to allow for students to be immersed in early childhood content. Classes are held at both our campus site and outreach sites in Western Kansas. Look for Southeast Kansas to be added soon! We now offer an accelerated program for elementary education. Your Early Childhood Unified coursework can easily be completed the semester prior to beginning the Elementary Education program.

  This program meets Kansas requirements for secondary education licensure (grades 6-12) in designated content areas. Students seeking licensure in other states should verify requirements with their state's education department before enrolling.

  Program Structure

  As this is a dual licensure program, upon completion of all courses and assessments, graduates are eligible for both the Elementary Education license (K-6th grade) and the Early Childhood Unified license (birth – grade 3) which qualifies individuals for both general education and special education teaching positions.
