Whether you want to teach history at the community college level, lead social studies curriculum development, or become a master history teacher in secondary schools, our program prepares you to excel. We empower history educators to strengthen both content knowledge and instructional strategies for diverse learners.

Our flexible program design and experienced faculty allow you to continue working full-time while advancing your career. Summer intensive courses bring together history educators from across the state for collaborative learning and professional growth.

  • Degree Requirements & Curriculum

    Program Structure

    30 credit hours | 10 courses

    Summer Intensive Courses (History Content): Two history courses offered each summer during one-week intensive sessions in June. Collaborate with fellow history educators to deepen content knowledge and explore innovative teaching methods.

    Fall & Spring Semesters (Education Core): Eight-week courses delivered through flexible online format with live and recorded Zoom sessions. Complete coursework in curriculum theory, instructional strategies, educational research, and professional writing.

    Admission Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in history, social studies education, or related field
    • Current teaching license (or eligibility for community college teaching)
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA (4.0 scale)
    • Two letters of recommendation

    Newman University's History Pedagogy program provides you with the knowledge and relevant skills to set you on the path to a fulfilling career.

    A degree at Newman University will prepare you for

    • Adjunct or full-time faculty at community colleges and junior colleges
    • High school history or social studies teacher
    • AP U.S. History or AP World History instructor
    • Social studies curriculum specialist or instructional coach
    • Department chair or social studies program coordinator
