The Higher Learning Commission is a regional accreditation agency that accredits degree granting institutions of higher education that are based in the 19-state North Central region of the United States. Institutions that HLC accredits are evaluated against HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation, a set of standards that institutions must meet to receive and/or maintain accredited status.
Admission Criteria
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Minimum GPA: 3.0 in overall coursework (this includes any previous graduate-level academic work)
Conditional Admission: Applicants not meeting all the admissions criteria, may still be considered for admission. Please contact an MSW staff member by calling 316.942.4291, ext. 2326.
Application Deadlines
To allow sufficient time to have your application reviewed and for the best field placements, applicants should apply, and submit all supporting documents by the application deadline. The application deadline is based on starting semester and full-time or part-time standing.
Advanced Standing
Undergraduate degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE).
Entry Point: Summer Semester: April 30
Entry Point: Fall Semester: June 30
Foundational Standing
Undergraduate degree in a major other than social work.
Entry Point: Fall Semester (Full-time): Open
Entry Point: Fall Semester (Part-time): July 31
Note: Applicants who have not completed their undergraduate program are still invited to apply to the Newman University MSW program. If accepted, admission may be conditional for receipt of an official transcript showing the completed undergraduate degree.

Please note: These application instructions pertain to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the LPN to BSN degrees.
Applications for the FALL class will be accepted January 1st through March 1st. Applications will be accepted after March 1st as space allows.
Applications for the SPRING class will be accepted July 1st through September 1st. Applications will be accepted after September 1st as space allows.
If you are currently a Newman student, please skip Step 1.
Step 1
If you are not a current student you will need to create an account and submit an undergraduate application to the University and then proceed to Step 2.
Step 2
Once you have submitted an undergraduate application to the University (or if you are already a Newman student) you will need to create a new application for this program. Select the Specialized Program application in the undergraduate section.
Program Requirements
- Nursing prerequisite and university general education courses must be successfully completed with a “C” or higher. (All nursing prerequisites must be successfully completed prior to entering the program except for 6 credits of university general education requirements)
- The following prerequisites must have been taken within the last five years: pathophysiology, anatomy, and physiology.
- An overall prerequisite GPA of at least 2.85 on a 4.0 grade point scale is required for admission consideration. Only required prerequisite courses are considered in calculating the GPA for admission.
- A professional resume.
- *TOEFL or IELTS: minimum scores listed below in one or the other.
- Interview with the Admissions and Progressions Committee.

COLLAPSE
Newman University was founded in 1933 with the purpose of training future teachers. The School of Education and Social Work is continuing the legacy of preparing students to transform society in the Wichita area, throughout Kansas and across the nation. To meet the needs of all students, programs are offered in Wichita and through outreach locations in western Kansas, southeast Kansas and Colorado Springs.
The teacher education program is committed to preparing educators to serve public, private and Catholic Schools locally and nationally. Our graduates are prepared to meet the social, emotional and educational needs of the students they serve. The experienced and highly trained education faculty members are ready to work closely with pre-service teachers to prepare them for a successful journey toward a teaching career.
The Social Work program offers both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. This versatile degree program offers student experiences in and out of the classroom that include courses in diversity, spirituality, leadership and practice skills as well as unique field placement opportunities reserved specifically for Newman students.
