Deciding on a Career

Individual career counseling and guidance is offered to students and alumni who may be uncertain about what major or career to pursue and believe they would benefit most by working individually with a career counselor. This process looks at the career planning process, including self-assessment and career exploration. We will look at your interests, values, abilities and personality as they relate to career information. You will likely be asked to take some career assessment inventories as well as do some research on your own.

Career (Self) Assessments

For students questioning which major to choose, What Can I Do With This Major (no fee for this assessment) is a helpful tool for exploring various areas of study leading to successful career choices.

Online MyMajors (no fee for this assessment) is a knowledge-based system that computes your College and Career Plan based on your individual academic aptitude and interests. This report will help you create your academic plan toward completing your degree. Your recommendations will be based on:  Grades, Course Enjoyment, GPA, Achievement Tests, Interests and Personality. The Advisement Report will be available at the completion of  the Academic Aptitude and Interests Survey. (20-30 minutes to complete)

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a personality assessment designed to help you understand yourself and others better. It can provide insights into what type of career might suit you best. The assessment takes about 30 minutes and is taken and scored in our office. (no fee for this assessment)

The Strong Interest Inventory ($9.95 for printed report) is another assessment tool that can be used when planning your career. This assessment categorizes employment into six different career areas and matches your interests with those of satisfied workers in these fields. The assessment is taken in our office but is not scored in our office and takes about one week to get the results.

StrengthsQuest (fee will be charged before taking this assessment) is a tool that provides you with the opportunity to develop strengths by building on what you do best – the way you most naturally think, feel, and behave as a unique individual.

The 30-minute online Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment has international presence as a talent measurement instrument and has currently helped students at more than 600 schools and universities to discover and build upon:

  • Behavior patterns that make you effective
  • Thought patterns that make you efficient
  • Beliefs that empower you to succeed
  • Attitudes that sustain your efforts toward achievement and excellence
  • Motivations that propel you to take action and maintain the energy needed to achieve

The more you know yourself the better your chances of being a successful, productive citizen. (Remember success will look different for each individual)
