A Heartbeat of Memories at Sacred Heart Hall

Kirk and Maribeth Lester's romance blossomed within Sacred Heart Hall, from a chance meeting in the CAC on January 16, 1973, to a heartfelt proposal on the front steps five years later. "I proposed where we met—it couldn't be more special," Kirk shares. Their tale, filled with laughter, love and learning, mirrors the countless stories birthed in this hall.

As we look toward refurbishing this century-old edifice, we're not merely renovating a building, but safeguarding a rich legacy so that Sacred Heart continues to be a backdrop for life-changing memories for generations to come.

Fountain Frolic: A Call to Nourish Future Memories

Ann (Dix) Martin, a 2000 Nursing alumna and former Resident Assistant (RA) at Merlini Hall, cherishes a whimsical escapade where, post a celebratory dinner, she and her fellow RAs decided to splash around in the campus fountain. Despite a humorous reprimand from a security guard, the moment epitomized the joy and camaraderie of her Newman days.

Now, as we envision an upgraded Sacred Heart Hall, our hope is that future students will be able to experience the same priceless memories of fellowship and joy that Ann had with her friends.

Sacred Beginnings: Dr. Mike Ludlow's Newman Chronicle

In the 70's Fr. Tom Welk celebrated Masses in a Sacred Heart Hall classroom for students and their families. It was a welcoming and comfortable space that impacted students like Dr. Mike Ludlow ’78, who credits Fr. Tom’s intimate Masses for bringing him back to the faith. Catholic and non-Catholic students alike attended the gatherings and were formed in a different way to draw closer to God during changing times. Sacred Heart fostered creativity and togetherness, leaving a lasting imprint on Mike. This cherished hall was also the backdrop to serious board discussions during his tenure as chairman, and the starting point of a lifelong romance with his future wife, Carm. Sacred Heart will be the same catalyst and cornerstone for the personal, spiritual, and communal growth for students in the generations to come.
