The CTL is committed to helping Newman instructors set goals for growth. Maybe you're looking to freshen things up or maybe you're having a tough semester--whatever the case, starting Fall '25, we will be offering the following confidential and non-evaluative consultative services.
Midterm Student Feedback (Fall 2025)
Would you like to gain insights into the student learning experience in one of your classes while you still have time to make adjustments? Would you like to collect feedback that can foster a productive reflection on your teaching? Then you might be interested in GIFT--the Group Feedback Instructional Technique(Barbeau & Cornejo Happel, 2023). Using GIFT, the CTL collects midterm student feedback for you based on the Critical Teaching Behaviors framework, facilitates a focus group with your students, and then offers you feedback and reflection on the results in a confidential and constructive atmosphere.
The benefits of midterm student feedback include:
- Receiving formative, actionable feedback to grow in your instructional practices
- Using feedback to reflect productively on teaching, make adjustments, and set goals
- Increase student motivation and participation and communicate value for their perspectives
- Foster a sense of belonging for both faculty and students.
All it requires is that you grant the CTL 25 minutes of class time, during Weeks 5-8, to collect feedback and facilitate the focus group with students. Then, 1-3 days later, you will meet with the facilitator for 20-30 minutes to discuss the results and to co-create a strategy for closing the feedback loop with students.
The CTL will be piloting the GIFT technique during 2024-25; stay tuned for a link to apply for Fall 2025.
