Application Steps for the Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSW)

FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN

  1. Apply to Newman University
  2. Meet with an admissions counselor and Social Work advisor
  3. Freshmen students interested in the BSW degree are admitted to Newman and begin courses primarily in General Education, the Newman Studies Program (NSP). At the end of sophomore year or early in the Junior year, students complete a formal application to the BSW Program.

FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS

  1. Apply to Newman University
  2. Meet with Social Work advisor to develop plan of study
  3. Transfer students interested in the BSW degree are admitted as transfer students to Newman and courses will be evaluated to ensure completion of General Education and NSP courses as well as BSW Program prerequisite courses. It is at this time, students complete a formal application to the BSW Program.

Admission Criteria

Pre-Social Work Course Requirements - 17 credit hours including:

  • PSY 1013 Gen Psychology (3)
  • SOC 1003 Prin of Sociology (3)
  • BIOL 1001 Human Bio, Hlth, Environ Lab (1)
  • BIOL 1003 Human Bio, Hlth & Environment (3)
  • PSY 2003 Developmental Psychology (3)
  • GNST 2881 College Research Literacy (1)
  • SWK 1013 Intro to Social Work (3)

Newman's BSW program has moved to an open admission policy. Students that have completed the prerequisite coursework may contact the program director for the ethics/behavior contract to affirm their intention to complete the BSW program. During the first term of the junior year, students will attend social work program orientation. Contact the BSW program director or program chair for more details.
