Credit for Prior Learning (CPL): Recognizing the Learning You’ve Already Done

At Newman University, we understand that learning doesn’t just happen in a classroom. Whether you've gained knowledge through military service, on-the-job training, professional certifications, volunteer work, or other life experiences, you may be closer to a degree than you think.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) offers adult learners and returning students the opportunity to earn college credit for college-level learning acquired outside traditional academic environments. It’s a flexible, respectful way to acknowledge the value of what you already know — and accelerate your path to graduation.

    How it Works

Through CPL, you can demonstrate your knowledge via:

    • Portfolio assessments
    • Standardized exams (like CLEP or DSST)
    • Industry certifications
    • Military transcripts
    • Workplace and professional training

Our advisors will work with you one-on-one to review your background, help you choose the most appropriate method for assessment, and guide you through the process.

    Why Consider CPL?

    • Save time and money by reducing the number of courses you need to complete your degree
    • Validate your real-world experience in a meaningful academic context
    • Stay motivated by seeing faster progress toward your educational goals
  • Program Talking Points:
