The Heartbeat - Newman University Fight Song
Stand up and cheer, our Jets are here,
with the pow'r to gain a vic-to-ry.
Up on your feet, hear the Heart beat,
we must win this fight for Newman U.
Loy-al to you, crimson and blue,
we'll back you all the way.
Stand up and sing and let it ring:
Jet power is here to stay!
Hail, Newman, Hail!
Newman used this alma mater briefly in the early 2000s. The tune is a popular one — first used by Cornell in the 1870s.
Lyrics: Unknown; Tune: Annie Lisle
Hail to Thee, O Alma Mater
Loud thy praise we’ll sing.
As we gather here together
Thee our love to bring.
Lift your voices
Swell the chorus,
Sing her praises sincere,
Hail to Thee, O Alma Mater
Hail, Newman, Hail!
Class Song of 1961
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, each Academy grade composed a “class song” which the student council added a verse each year. Most of these songs are lost, but Class of 1961’s survived.
Lyrics: Unknown; Tune: Annie Lisle
O Hail to our class, the Class of sixty-one!
With faithful hearts their joyful songs resound far and near
O give a hearty rousing cheer for all the girls assembled here,
Come join the happy song
We’re the Class of Sixty-One!
Give cheers to our school, For it is S.H.A.
Its hallowed halls and ivy walls re-echo our lay!
We tell of every happy year that we have spent together here.
Come join the happy song
We’re the Class of Sixty-One!
To Kansas Newman
By Sister Rosemary Sakis, ASC
President Giroux asked Sister Rosemary to write an alma mater in preparation for Newman’s 50th Anniversary in 1983. The song was unpopular because it was difficult to sing. The song fell into disuse in the early 1990s and disappeared entirely after the school changed its name to Newman University.
Kansas Newman, how we love you,
Life and growth have you inspired.
Though the hours and years
Knowing joys and tears,
You have served your people well.
Many changes have you weathered:
Progress kept its steady pace!
Half a century and we’ve come to see
You are part of us; you’ll always be!
Chorus:
The charity of Christ Urges Us On!
In Him we find our way
To a new tomorrow,
Bright and new tomorrow
Born of dreams we dream today
Many hopes have you implanted,
Many hearts have you enflamed.
Mid the gloom and dark you have been a spark,
Lighting torches all along your way!
Great the deeds you have accomplished,
Things far greater still in store!
Kansas Newman, we salute you.
We shall sing forever more!
Chorus:
The charity of Christ Urges Us On!
In Him we find our way
To a new tomorrow,
Bright and new tomorrow
Born of dreams we dream today (repeat last time)
SHC Alma Mater (Proposed, never adopted)
By John Sample
In the 1970s Newman University held a contest where people could submit an alma mater that they had composed, and the school could vote for the best one, which would then become the official alma mater. Unfortunately the only one to submit a piece was the music director, John Sample. The college decided to wait to choose an official alma mater at a later date.
Thru Sacred Heart we seek the future,
Building hopes and dreaming dreams,
In search of truth we journey to Her,
Short our insight, long our themes.
Years of fellowship and learning,
Weighing evil with the good,
Life’s ambitions later turning
Toward the quest for brotherhood.
O Sacred Heart we will remember,
Tho our paths divergent be.
Many ties we cannot sever,
Bound in place by Memory.
Many ties we cannot sever,
Bound in place by Memory.
Caritas Christi
By Sister Lucy Black, ASC
Music professor Sister Lucy Black wrote this piece for the annual Candlelight Ceremony and important annual Masses in the 1950s. It uses the school motto, “Caritas Christi Urget Nos” or the Charity of Christ urges us. The verse comes from Galatians 6:2— “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
Caritas, Caritas, Caritas Christi,
Caritas Christi, urget, urget, nos.
Alter alterius onera portate et sic adimplebitis legen Christi.
Caritas, Caritas, Caritas Christi,
Caritas Christi, urget, urget, nos.
