Newman University Anti-Hazing Policy
Newman University upholds a strong commitment to human dignity through its mission and The Newman University Code:
“As members of the Newman community, we pledge to live in the spirit of critical consciousness by respecting the dignity of every person, honoring both personal and institutional integrity, and striving to embrace all humanity.”
Newman University expects students, faculty, and staff to strive to live out its code and thus will not tolerate any hazing of a student by any individual, team, or group affiliated with the University. Hazing is defined as an act that:
- endangers physical health or psychological safety above what is reasonably encountered in the course of participation in the institution of higher education or a student organization, or
- destroys or removes public or private property, or
- encourages the violation of civil, state, or federal law, or
- disrupts the Newman community life, or
- violates the Newman Code
for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership on a team or in a group or organization.
Any member found participating in, facilitating, or failing to report such harassment or abuse - intentional, knowing, or reckless- regardless of the willingness of persons to participate, will face immediate disciplinary action, including, but not limited to, potential suspension, expulsion, legal consequences, and/or termination of employment. We encourage all members of the Newman community to actively stand against hazing by promoting support of the Newman University Code.
