    African-American Monumental Life Settlement Scholarship

    The Kansas Insurance Department is charged with dispersing funds from a life insurance company settlement relating to a lawsuit involving African-Americans. The African American Monumental Life Settlement Scholarship has five $1000 scholarships available to students from Kansas institutes of higher learning for the Fall 2013 semester.

    Eligibility: African-American student, high school graduate or GED equivalent, enrolled in a Kansas accredited institution of higher learning during the 2012-2013 school year, majoring in one of the following (mathematics, computer science, business, accounting, economics, finance, investments, 3.0 cum GPA on 4.0 scale.

    AES Engineers Scholarship

    Our belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason we are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluated the essays that are submitted. Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study.     American Association of Nurse Anesthetists

    Student Emergency Loan Information: If you are currently enrolled in a nurse anesthesia program and have encountered an unexpected occurrence for which you need a loan and have exhausted all other sources, AANA does offer one-time loans. In order to qualify for such a loan, among other criteria you must be an associate member of the AANA and have been a student in a program for at least one year.

    Gilman International Scholarship Program

    The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

    Eligibility: Applicant must be receiving a Pell grant. Must be applying or accepted to a study abroad program that is not in Cuba or any country on the State Department’s current Travel Warning list.

    Awards: 777 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad.

    Jack Cooke Scholarship

    The Foundation will award approximately 60 scholarships to outstanding students each year. Each award will cover a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, and other required fees, and books for the final two to three years of the baccalaureate degree. Every scholarship varies, depending on the cost of attendance and other scholarships or grants received.

    Kansas Board of Regents Dependents of Deceased Public Safety Officers Assistance Program

    K.S.A. 75-4364 provides an opportunity for dependents of certain public safety officers who died as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty to enroll in Kansas post secondary educational institutions without payment of tuition or fees.

    Eligibility: Public safety officer is defined by the statute to include law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical services attendants. Dependent is defined to include a birth child, adopted child or stepchild OR any child other than the foregoing who was actually dependent in whole or in part on a public safety officer AND who is related to the public safety officer by marriage or consanguinity. Persons, who can establish that they were dependents of deceased public safety officers, even if the deaths preceded the effective date of the legislation, are eligible. Acceptable forms of documentation include, among others, birth and death certificates, news reports and obituaries. If the deceased public safety officer was an emergency medical services attendant, a copy of the certificate from the Emergency Medical Services Board is required.

    Award Amount: Cost of tuition and fees, please note the student will be responsible for other charges associated with the student’s academic program and living costs, such as books and room and board.

    Kansas Board of Regents Foster Child Education Assistance Program

    Senate Bill 85 provides an opportunity for foster care children in the custody of the Kansas Department of Social & Rehabilitation Services and in a foster care placement; at age 18; or in foster care placement while graduating from high school or completing their General Educational Development (GED) prior to their 18th birthday; or adopted from foster care after the age of 16; or guardianship subject to chapter 38 or 59 of K.S.A. from foster care placement on or after age 16 to enroll in Kansas educational institutions without payment of tuition. This program provides for undergraduate enrollment of eligible applicant through the semester applicant attains 23 years of age. Enrollment without charge of tuition will be possible at Kansas educational institutions including: area vocational schools, area vocational-technical schools, community colleges, the municipal university, state educational institutions or technical colleges.

    Eligibility: Eligible applicant enrolls in a Kansas educational institution on or after July 1, 2006; and the applicant was in custody of the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services and in a foster care placement on the date such applicant reached 18 years of age; or prior to age 18 graduated from high school or fulfilled the requirements for a GED while in foster care placement and custody of the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services; or adopted from a foster care placement on or after applicant’s 16th birthday; or left a foster care placement subject to a guardianship under chapter 38 or 59 of the K.S.A. on or after applicant’s 16th birthday. The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services Central Office must verify the applicant’s eligibility status prior to enrollment.

    Award Amount: Cost of tuition, please note the student will be responsible for other charges associated with the student’s academic program and living costs, such as books and room and board.

    Society of Professional Journalist Kansas Chapter – Heaton-Perry Memorial Scholarship

    The Heaton-Perry Scholarship, worth $1,000, is in memory of former journalists Robert Heaton and Martin Perry. Heaton was a Wichita Eagle-Beacon reporter whose undercover investigation of the Ku Klux Klan earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination. He died in a 1981 car accident. Perry, a Wichitan, was managing editor and editorial page editor of the Wichita Beacon. He died of a heart attack in 1967.

    Eligibility: College juniors and seniors are eligible. Sophomores may apply, designating the award for their junior year. Applicants do not have to be journalism or communication majors, but they must demonstrate a strong and sincere interest in print journalism, broadcast journalism or photojournalism. Applicants must carry a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and be enrolled in and pass six hours of college credit or more.

    Award: The winner of the scholarship will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

    Society of Professional Journalist Kansas Chapter – Michael Bates Memorial Scholarship

    The Michael Bates Memorial Scholarship is named in memory of former Associated Press journalist Mike Bates. Bates covered central and western Kansas specializing in agricultural reporting. During his lengthy career, Bates covered the 1991 tornado that devastated Andover, the Karen Silkwood trial, and the six-week Wichita abortion protests in 1991. Bates was president of the Kansas Professional Chapter of SPJ at the time of his death in 1996.

    Eligibility: College juniors and seniors are eligible. Sophomores may apply, designating the award for their junior year. Applicants do not have to be journalism or communication majors, but they must demonstrate a strong and sincere interest in print journalism, broadcast journalism or photojournalism. Applicants must carry a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), be enrolled in and pass 12 hours of college credit, and participate in outside journalism-related activities demonstrated by involvement in student or trade organizations and/or student or other news organizations or publications.

    Award: The winner of the scholarship will receive a $1,500 scholarship; in addition they will also receive financial help on transportation and registration to the Society of Professional Journalists national convention.

    United Tribes of Kansas and Southeast Nebraska – Workforce Investment Act Program (WIA)

    WIA allows the eligible client to attend a vocational or higher education training program in a skill that has a labor market demand. Students can receive tuition, books, and fees not covered by a Pell Grant or scholarship.

    Eligibility: Must be American Indian or Alaskan Native or Hawaiian Native and economically disadvantaged or unemployed or underemployed. Must be a resident of Richardson County, Nebraska or one of the 78 eligible Counties in Kansas or one of the 23 eligible Counties in Missouri.

    Yuma Rehabilitation Hospital Loan Repayment for Occupational Therapy Assistant Students

    Yuma Rehabilitation Hospital is located in Yuma, Arizona and they are looking for students who have graduated with occupational therapy degrees to work for them. In return they offer a $5,000 sign-on bonus and $5,000 towards student loans.
