Brenda (Thome) Eck A'67 KNC '87

Mr. John Urban Eck, 63, foreman for Foundations, Inc., passed away December, 25, 2010.  Services will be held at St. Mark Catholic Church, St. Mark, KS.  John is survived by his mother, Dorothy and his wife, Brenda, both of Colwich, KS.  His sons include: John (Emily), Daniel (Karla), David (Shellie), and daughters:  Katie (Damon) Turkle, and Betsy Eck.  There are 11 grandchildren.  Sending our thoughts and prayers to the Eck family.

Trudy (Giles) Giard '68 SHC

Mr. Norman Lee Giles, 86, of Ashland, KS died December 20, 2010.  Norman was a lifelong rancher and farmer and a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, in  Spearville.  Norman Lee is survived by his wife, Dolores; sons: Roger and Kelly, five daughters: alumni, Trudy Giard, Audry Gates, Jody Peintner, Lorie Horacek, and Julie Cox.  There are 15 grandchildren and 6 grandchildren.  Sending our sympathy to the Giles family.

Jim and LaVonne Jordan were married 50 years ago in Wichita, KS. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church on December 27, 1960.  Their entire married life has been spent in Wichita.  They have seven children, 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.  Since retiring, they have enjoyed seeing the USA in their fifth-wheel trailer, then abroad to Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, England, Mexico, Peru, and the Panama Canal.  They celebrated with family and...

Mary Elizabeth Giroux

Mary Elizabeth Giroux, the eldest daughter of Dr. Robert (d. 1/9/2007) and Anne Giroux, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010 with many of her family members at her side.  Dr. Giroux served as  President of then Kansas Newman College from 1982 – 1989.   During those years, his wife Anne was our regal "first lady" and many of his eleven children attended the college, with four earning their degrees here.  Mary, age 51 at the time of her death, suffered from diabetes and...

Matthew May

Matthew F. May, 75, died November 28, 2010.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Arrah.  His children are: Becky Ozbun (Gregg), Barbara Gigstad (Todd), Thomas May (Michelle), Tim May (Beth), and 9 grandchildren.  His sisters are: Rita Craft A '45, Martha Flaherty, and Mary Ann Talley A'61.  Matt touched many lives through his church, coaching, teaching and mentoring of students.  Sending our prayers to the May family.

Greetings from Timm Cantrell who is now the Manufacturing Manager for Ametek Advanced Industries in Wichita.  Timm was a baseball player while at Newman and is at home in Wichita, KS.

Sue Castile '99

Newman University (1998-Present)
'99 Sue Castile's profile was featured in a Wichita Business Journal article, Nov. 12, 2010.  Sue is the Executive Director of Inter-faith Ministries and former Director of Diversity Kansas for 10 years.  She now oversees 28 employees and a $1.7 million operating budget.  The organization operates 105 low income apartments and two shelters.  Sue says "To get to be the steward for this type of work is an honor."  Congratulations Sue!

Howard Utz (Father of alums)

Mr. Howard Utz Sr. died December 2, 2010.  He was a WW II veteran and worked most of his life as a professional salesman.  Howard is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty; children: Cheryl '99 Young (Don) '72; Howard Utz '73, Jr. (Dee) '73, Leonard '75 Utz (Kathy), son-in-law, Joseph Page; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Matthew Horney '07

Newman University (1998-Present)
Congratulations to Matthew Horney, who is a finalist for Finney County Crystal Apple Award for Teaching Excellence.  He teaches math and science at Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center.  Horney is all about the real world.  He has been teaching for only two and one-half years, but realized that he must show the students real life applications to use with the science and math that he teaches.  "Once they see the real application they understand the concept better."

Mitch Pishko MBA '03 is now a sales director for Hawker Beechcraft Corp. in Texas.  He writes to thank his MBA teachers, especially Ron Ryan for his real world examples and copious catch phrases! Mitch, Kristi and family currently reside in  Plano, TX.
